Food is medicine and can be used functionally to alleviate period pain. Specific foods can help uterine muscles relax or present lenitive effects with the outcome of decreasing the pain.
- POTASSIUM – in the case of a painful period, I recommend eating potassium-rich foods, such as banana, avocado, zucchini, green beans, citrus fruits, tomatoes, prunes, and dates. Potassium has myorelaxant properties and so helps with the relaxation of uterine muscles, decreasing pain.
- CHAMOMILE DECOCTION – boil 20g of chamomile (loose-leaf or from a teabag) in 200mL of water for 5-7 minutes. Sip on the chamomile and consume within 10 minutes. Chamomile has antispasmodic, lenitive, myorelaxant, and debloating properties.
- BASIL TEA – boil 10-12 basil leaves in 200mL of water for at least 3 minutes. Basil has antispasmodic, lenitive, myorelaxant, and debloating properties.
