PMS: Natural Remedies for Painful Period

Food is medicine and can be used functionally to alleviate period pain. Specific foods can help uterine muscles relax or present lenitive effects with the outcome of decreasing the pain.

  1. POTASSIUM – in the case of a painful period, I recommend eating potassium-rich foods, such as banana, avocado, zucchini, green beans, citrus fruits, tomatoes, prunes, and dates. Potassium has myorelaxant properties and so helps with the relaxation of uterine muscles, decreasing pain.
  1. CHAMOMILE DECOCTION – boil 20g of chamomile (loose-leaf or from a teabag) in 200mL of water for 5-7 minutes. Sip on the chamomile and consume within 10 minutes. Chamomile has antispasmodic, lenitive, myorelaxant, and debloating properties.
  1. BASIL TEA – boil 10-12 basil leaves in 200mL of water for at least 3 minutes. Basil has antispasmodic, lenitive, myorelaxant, and debloating properties.
